At the Northeast Gate of the Gilmorehill campus, right next to the corner of Kelvin Way and University Avenue, sits a small building, reminiscent of a guardhouse. The Pearce Lodge was built in 1887 and originally housed the Department of Naval Architecture. Currently residing within is the Safety and Environmental Protection Services (SEPS).
What makes the Pearce Lodge particularly interesting is that parts of the Old College were moved brick by brick from High Street when the Old College was demolished in 1870. The archway was incorporated from the old gateway, along with the cornice, the ledge, next to it and on the side of the building, and several smaller architectural details (which I’ll feature one day). Pearce Lodge is named after Sir William Pearce (1833-1888), a shipbuilder of the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. who provided the funding for the construction of the Pearce Lodge.
