Monkey-Puzzle Tree

Monkey-Puzzle TreeYou’ve probably walked past this tree several times if you’ve ever been at Glasgow University, and perhaps thought to yourself “that’s an odd-looking tree”. Right between the Main Gate and The Square is a Monkey-Puzzle Tree (Araucaria araucana). The name comes from the 19th century when it was cultivated and one owner is said to have remarked “it would puzzle a monkey to climb that”. The tree is native to parts of Chile and Argentina.
